For me, the most satisfying aspect of driving the Jetta TDI is the understated performance of its Clean Diesel technology and DSG gearbox. The engine is remarkably quiet and competent. Even when revved to its 4,500 rpm redline, the little oil burner remains refined and polished as the DSG gearbox instantly inserts a new cog with such precision that one barely detects the event.

Clean Diesel technology offers a significant advantage over hybrid technology in that there's no massive battery pack to manufacture, replace or dispose of. And of course, diesel technology has existed since the Stone Age, or close to it.
