Style and powertrains should help Equinox leave a mark
Crossover SUVs are becoming a bit like bellybuttons: they're all a bit different, largely similar, and just about everyone's got one. This is one of the hottest vehicle genre going-- but it's also one of the hardest to make an impression upon.

LTZ tester came with an upgraded stereo, USB interface, Bluetooth, a sunroof and even a motorized tailgate.

Fresh out of bankruptcy protection and zoned in on a more focused product lineup, GM's Chevrolet brand is looking to leave a mark. They've been given a rare second chance in some regards, so they're using a very aggressive and non-generic approach with their second-generation Equinox.

Simple enough idea, really: deliver class-leading styling, technologies, and a highly efficient powertrain lineup. Exclusive OnStar and a 160,000 kilometre warranty sweeten the deal, as do some surprising features.

Of course, listening to loyal customers is a sure way to build in some real-world value, too. Sharon Sikorski, GM's brand manager for the Chevrolet Equinox, explains. “We worked on all the features, both big and small, that the customer wants. We've listened to the customer here like never before”.

The attentive listening has translated into some clever touches, both inside and out. The interior gets plenty of storage compartments, a monstrous centre console and mainly easy-to-use controls throughout. Multi-flex seating allows rear-seat passengers plenty of legroom or an expanded cargo space with a simple slide of the bench, too.

Importantly, Equinox isn't a boring place to be. The seats, two-tone color scheme and dynamic cockpit execution were all appreciated. There's a power outlet wherever you need one, and the nicely loaded LTZ tester came with an upgraded stereo, USB interface, Bluetooth, a sunroof and even a motorized tailgate.

Consumer priorities also dictated that the Equinox needed to be heavily focused on styling. As a result, 17-inch wheels are standard, the body is sculpted and intricate, and there's plenty of sophistication and chrome accenting throughout. Subtle details include chrome foglamp trim bits, elegant finish work on several body lines, and tight panel gaps.

Security and control were other customer must-haves, so engineers fitted four-wheel ABS disc-brakes, Stabilitrak stability control, and OnStar to all models. An automatic all wheel drive system is available as well, and it's priced considerably lower than many competitors.
