The Dodge Avenger debuted in the 2008 model year, based on the same underpinnings as the Chrysler Sebring. Styling is evocative of big-brother Charger, and exudes typical Dodge aggressiveness. Also, like all Chrysler products, you get a lot of size for your buck.

But a lack of finesse in most other aspects has relegated Avenger to middle-of-pack or lower status, when compared to the other competitors in the midsize segment.

For 2010 we have a new, simplified Avenger lineup.

Gone is the optional 2.7-litre V6 engine, leaving only the 173-hp 2.4 litre I4, and the 235-hp 3.5-litre V6.

Also gone is the R/T model, but the R/T spirit lives on as a package.

Avenger's base model, SE, starts the party at $22,995, but offers more standard equipment than previously, such as premium cloth with stain repel properties, fold-flat passenger seat, driver's side manual lumbar, driver's seat back map pocket, ABS with 4-wheel discs, and active (front row) head restraints.

Those upgrades also find their way onto the $24,795 SXT. Additional new-for-2010 standard features for SXT include fog lamps and AM/FM 6-disc MP3 radio. The new $27,295 R/T offers the 3.5-litre V6, 6-speed autostick tranny, heated seats, dual chrome tipped exhaust, 18-inch aluminum wheels with AS performance tires, sport tuned suspension, dual rear exhaust with bright tips, rear spoiler, premium headliner, firm feel power steering, R/T badges, power heated foldaway mirrors, and heated leather-faced bucket seats.

New options include rear spoiler for SXT, and 18-inch chrome clad wheels for R/T.
