Reviving a forgotten achievement
All models feature a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual mode, but each one of them gets a specific set of wheels, ranging from 17 to 20 inches. Exclusive to Ford are such technologies as the MyKey safety system and EasyFuel capless fuel filler.

Not a single detail has been overlooked and occupant protection was a top priority. The base SE model offers AdvanceTrac stability control, ABS brakes, steering wheel-mounted controls and a full assortment of airbags. Keyless entry and a tilt-telescopic steering wheel are also standard fare.

There are also a couple of additional gadgets like Sirius satellite radio as well as an onboard computer.

The Taurus SEL adds dual-zone climate control, paddle shifters and available all-wheel drive. There are also a couple of additional gadgets like Sirius satellite radio as well as an onboard computer.

Moving up to the Limited model will put owners in an even more luxurious sedan. Expect to find a 6-CD changer, SYNC multimedia interface and available navigation. In terms of comfort, the driver gets an 8-way power-adjustable seat with massage, plus adjustable pedals with position memory.

Finally, buyers opting for the top-of-the-line SHO will benefit from other upgrades in addition to the EcoBoost powertrain and standard AWD. Both the suspension and steering are tuned differently in order to deliver greater performance and driving dynamics. A rear spoiler is also in the mix.

The interior of the SHO is set apart by genuine aluminum inlays and multicontour seats for superior support. Blind spot monitoring comes standard, as do a rearview camera and a premium Sony stereo.

The beginning of a new era?
The all-new 2010 Ford Taurus could not have been introduced at a more appropriate time for the American auto industry. In addition to domestic rivals like the Chrysler 300 and the upcoming Buick Allure, the Taurus must fight off a dramatic decline in full-size sedan sales.

At Ford, everyone is probably dying to know the answer to the question: will the new Taurus manage to create the same kind of shockwave as in 1986? Pricing and availability have yet to be announced.
