This new transmission allows more direct shifts under acceleration, especially from third to sixth gear. Fuel economy is improved and, amazingly, low-rpm operation is not really uncomfortable. A new quick-downshift program also allows the driver to shift from fifth to second gear when need be.

With the hybrid, though, it's a different story. The 3.5L V6 at the core of the system is detuned to 245 horsepower; however, pairing it to an electric motor increases total output to 295 horsepower. It's a shame the continuously-variable transmission (CVT) is such a disappointing performer. On the plus side, the advanced EV mode allows the RX to run solely on electric power for a longer period of time. Of course, regenerative braking is still being used to charge the batteries. The latter come from a new generation of smaller, lighter and more efficient batteries.

The revised rear suspension incorporates a double-wishbone setup for greater rigidity.

The all-wheel drive system has been improved and is now quicker to transfer 50 percent of the available torque to the front wheels. On a more important note, the revised rear suspension incorporates a double-wishbone setup for greater rigidity, thereby eliminating the need for strut tower braces under the cargo area. Obviously, cargo room is increased as a result.

Inspiring driving experience
In reality, the new 2010 Lexus RX takes off where its predecessor left off. It's every bit as luxurious, stylish and efficient. While the stiffer suspension provides a little more driving excitement, the party behind the wheel is spoiled by the heavy steering, especially in the hybrid.

Bottom line: the Lexus RX evolves beautifully for 2010. There are no radical changes in design or philosophy, but this premium crossover continues to stand proudly and confidently on the road, fulfilling its mission with class and style.
