Drink it in
It begins with the progressive and precise direct-drive, electronically-assisted steering that, unlike in the 370Z, won’t bite back and make you regret having gone towards your apex a little too soon. As driving on a track requires more effort and brain power than when cruising on the highway, the easy and friendly shifter and clutch pedal combination will not have you break out into a dingy sweat every time you think about changing gears, unlike in the Z, once again. Next come the brakes which are positive and easy to modulate. Although the pedal could be firmer, I have no doubt that they will keep the RX-8’s 1,389 kg (3,056 lb) in check.

What’s more, the car’s near perfect weight distribution of 48/52 ensures agility, nimbleness and superior handling. Balance and poise are impressive on the track as well as on the road. This is a fabulous driver’s car.

If it weren’t for the Mustang...
Over the last little while, I’ve had the opportunity to have some rip-roarin’ good times at the wheel of many a sports car: Ford Mustang, Nissan 370Z, Hyundai Genesis Coupe and Chevrolet Camaro. At $46,390 as tested, the RX GT with Navigation is no bargain. You can purchase top models of all these aforementioned cars with this coin and all are more powerful but yet, none are more dedicated to the drive. Unfortunately for the Mazda, the charm and charisma of the Mustang has the aging RX-8 in its wake.
