Handling, style upgrades prioritized in second-generation car
Mazda's just released the details of their new turbocharged torque-monster, the 2010 Mazdaspeed3. Delivering a high-performance punch for drivers after a functional and versatile five-door, the latest from Mazda's go-fast department boasts a potent four cylinder engine, upgraded dynamics, and a high-powered interpretation of Mazda's new design language.

Mazda's just released the details of their new turbocharged torque-monster, the 2010 Mazdaspeed3.

Setting the Mazdaspeed3 apart from the standard car is a deeper front air dam, flared fenders and a hood-mounted scoop to feed fresh air into the top-mount intercooler. RX8-inspired wheels accent the side profile, which is characterized by a flowing, sculpted silhouette. In the rear, a valence, spoiler and new dual-outlet exhaust tips are fitted.

The interior of the new Mazdaspeed3 is accordingly upgraded as well. On top of its ultra-modern design, aspiring racing drivers will appreciate the performance seats and LED boost gauge. The latter is positioned between the instruments to keep the current state of the turbocharger on constant display. Ultimately, the 2010 Mazdaspeed3's interior will impress performance and design enthusiasts alike-- while providing seating for 5 and enough room to accommodate a wide range of activities.

Standard are electroluminescent gauges, aluminum pedals, dual-zone climate control and distinctive interior trim accents. There's an optional 'Tech' package, which adds advanced keyless entry, push-button start, navigation, a perimeter alarm and a Bose 6-CD audio system. In the interests of weight savings and structural integrity, a sunroof is not available.

Under the hood, the second-generation Mazdaspeed3 is, as expected, largely unchanged. A carryover from the previous generation, the MZR 2.3 liter DISI Turbo engine generates 263 horsepower backed by 280 lb.-ft of torque from 3,000 RPM. Output puts the Mazda at a power advantage over cars like the Mini Cooper S, Volkswagen GTI and Chevrolet HHR SS-- though the Dodge Caliber SRT-4 still owns the market in terms of power per dollar.
