The Nonconformist
What we saw was a highly-diversified and comprehensive lineup that consists in three different body styles: Cargo van, Passenger Van and Cab chassis. The Sprinter can be Standard (19'4"), Long (22'8") or Extra-Long (24'1"), with a 12' or 14'2" wheelbase.

Interior height in the back area is either 5'5" or 6'4", meaning you can stand up and walk around without bending forward like some sort of monkey!

Mercedes-Benz also offers 2500 and 3500 models with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of 3.88, 4.53 or 5.0 tons depending on the configuration. Add a choice of 100+ body colours and special paints, and you get a van that meets an impressively-wide array of consumer needs.

Setting the Sprinter apart
Manufactured in Düsseldorf and Ludwigsfelde, the Cargo van and Passenger van both feature rear doors that swing open 270 degrees and lock on to the body sides with the help of magnets. The sliding door on the passenger’s side offers the widest opening in its class at 4'3.2". Optionally, the Cargo van can be equipped with a second sliding door on the driver’s side, something none of the Sprinter’s rivals can brag about. By the way, all doors are flush with the floor.

A 3.0-litre, V6 turbodiesel engine with direct injection and BlueTEC technology provides the Sprinter with 188 horsepower and a whopping 325 lb-ft of torque at just 1,400 rpm. Fleet managers will also appreciate its high fuel economy of about 18 mpg (13 L/100 km) in favourable road and driving conditions.

This sophisticated powerplant is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission… with manual mode! Seasoned drivers will therefore be able to take advantage of engine braking during descents.

Elsewhere, the power-assisted, rack-and-pinion steering feels precise and, more importantly perhaps, it shortens the turning circle to a class-leading 47'6.9".
