Outlander is Mitsubishi’s excellent compact FWD/AWD crossover based on the Lancer platform.

This generation of Outlander first debuted in 2007. For 2010 it receives its first major mid-cycle revision. As such, witness the new front-end styling, and the items added to its standard equipment — illuminated vanity mirrors, intelligent windshield washers, short pole antenna, and Hill Start Assist (on AWD models).

But the biggest news by far for 2010 is that the top-shelf Outlander XLS model ($34,498) now features Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC), a very advanced AWD system previously exclusive to the Lancer Evolution sports sedan. With its active front differential, S-AWC can vary torque flow to each wheel, adjusting for understeer and oversteer conditions, to ultimately deliver a high level of traction and a very sporting driving experience.

Also helping XLS model’s sporting potential are the 3.0-litre V6 (now with 10 more horses, for a total of 230), and the 6-speed Sportronic automatic transmission, with steering wheels mounted shifter paddles.

Outlander’s base model is the ES, which can be configured in either FWD ($25,498) or AWD ($27,998) formats, and is exclusively powered by the 168-hp 2.4-litre I4.

The model in the middle, LS ($29,498), features a driver-selectable 4WD system, and the 3.0-litre V6. Both LS and XLS include a foldaway third-row seat.

ES AWD and LS also benefit this year from a higher-grade seat fabric, a louder 710-watt auto system in the Sun & Sound package, and an upgraded security system with motion detector. LS and XLS now feature LED turn signals in the exterior mirrors. And XLS now features high discharge headlamps, a new instrument cluster and colour info display, and a 10 GB music server (when equipped with the Nav and Entertainment package).
