Subaru's sporty WRX has been a recipient of continuous improvement since its introduction. Well today at the New York International Auto Show, its latest incarnations were unveiled: the new 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX and WRX STI. And once again, the WRX STI is offered as a 4-door sedan and 5-door hatchback.

Both WRX and WRX STI are still powered by a 2.5-litre, turbocharged boxer engines producing respectively 265 and 305 hp, and 244 and 290 ft-lb of torque. The WRX's will be coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission and the STI's, with a 6-speed manual transmission. And the AWD system will naturally continue to be delivered standard on all WRX models.

Other than revised aerodynamics and styling, the WRX STI 2011 also inherits a redesigned cabin. In the four-door variant, which is 165 mm longer than the five-door, the trunk can accommodate three large golf bags. The rear seat is split 60/40 and folds flat. The five-door version has a wide, flat cargo area floor that can accommodate two large golf bags when the seats are up. This extra space is accessible thanks to a suspension system that doesn’t encroach on the cargo area.

Look for the 2011 Impreza WRX and WRX STI to land on the Canadian market in early summer.

As reported by Subaru Canada
NEW YORK, New York - Subaru today introduced a new 4-door version of the Impreza WRX STI performance flagship. This will be the first time that the WRX STI has been offered both the 5-door and 4-door body styles in the same model year. In addition to the new styling, the 2011 WRX STI features significantly revised suspension tuning and lighter 18-inch wheels for even sharper handling.

"The continuous evolution and development of the WRX STI is driven by strong, loyal and vocal support from thousands of enthusiastic owners of this exciting high-performance vehicle," said Katsuhiro Yokoyama, president and CEO of Subaru Canada, Inc. "The 2011 WRX STI will expand the appeal of this iconic performance model to a wider range of driving enthusiasts."

Performance evolution

The 2011 WRX STI continues as the ultimate-performance Subaru with its high-boost 305 horsepower turbocharged/intercooled Subaru Boxer engine teamed with a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission and the exclusive Multi-Mode Driver Controlled Centre Differential (DCCD) version of Symmetrical full-time All-Wheel Drive.
