SUV or wagon?
Multi-purpose engine
Nearly all Subarus share the same powertrain. Some add a turbocharger, but most, like my tester, rely on the 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder, naturally-aspirated boxer, whose track record for reliability and dependability has been quite commendable lately.

The horizontally-opposed configuration sees its pistons placed 180 degrees apart, creating a flatter, lower profile and therefore a lower centre of gravity. The end result, of course, is superior stability and handling. A cold-running boxer is prone to knocking, however, an irritant every Subaru owner has become familiar with.

What a small price to pay when you can reap the benefits of the company’s proven powerplant and world-class symmetrical all-wheel drive system! In my case, the latter operated directly and seamlessly to deliver all-weather traction and confidence.

By the way, the 5-speed manual transmission mated to the engine is a breeze to manipulate. It won’t excite you, that’s for sure, but it’s a stark upgrade over the optional 4-speed autobox. Even better, the unit comes with Hill Start Assist, which prevents the Forester from rolling back even on the steepest inclines.

Great for the road less travelled
Despite a suspension that needs improvements in the comfort department, the 2010 Subaru Forester 2.5x is more than decently equipped and capable of overcoming obstacles without hesitation. It’s obviously not an extreme off-roader, but you can enjoy fun times in just about any situation on any type of road.

On pavement, this SUV feels smoother than the Impreza, which rides on the same platform, but a tad noisier. Driving remains easy thanks to a precise, docile and very sedan-like steering. And you can carry your entire family and gear all the while.

So, SUV or wagon? Honestly, the Forester is the very definition of "crossover." A fine crossover.
