Subaru's flagship car, the Legacy, has been significantly re-designed and updated for 2010. Recently presented to crowds at the New York International Auto Show, the new Legacy boasts an updated look, some new powertrain hardware and what Subaru says is the roomiest Legacy interior ever.

The word larger was tossed around the Subaru stand a fair bit, as the new model is stretched in the wheelbase department to enable nearly 4 inches of additional rear legroom. The car is also more than 3 inches higher and nearly 4 inches wider than the outgoing model--in the interest of head and shoulder room.

Of course, all the upsizing will make the new Legacy heavier--though powerplants have been upgraded accordingly to maintain the level of performance that shoppers expect here. Look for a 265-horsepower, turbocharged 2.5-litre boxer engine on the Legacy 2.5 GT model, as well as an increased 256 ponies from the flat-six mill in the Legacy 3.0R.

The four-speed automatic has been scrapped in favor of a new 'Lineartronic' Continually Variable Transmission (CVT), though the 2.5-litre engine can be hooked up to a six-speed manual as well. Of course, symmetrical AWD is standard.

Subaru stresses that despite the increase in power and size, the 2010 Legacy provides quicker acceleration and lower fuel consumption than current Legacy models.
