And you won’t notice this on a test drive, but even sporty city driving should only peg mileage at around 10L of premium per 100 km. That’s good indeed for the available performance.

GTI is also mainly comfortable, solid, tight and extremely easy to speed in. Some will even question the speedometer’s calibration, as little about the GTI’s velocity is communicated into the cabin.

All in all, a very good machine--but not a perfect one. The pedals on manual-equipped models are jammed tightly together and mounted too far to the right, and your audiophile writer found the factory stereo system to be merely mediocre.

Ultimately, if speed and power are your sole priorities, you’re in an enviable position with plenty of options. Sure--the GTI mightn’t sound like the sixties or do John Force-style burnouts down half a quarter mile track, but where everyday sports car liveability is concerned, it’s virtually untouchable. If you’re after an uncompromised sports car for everyday use, it starts to make plenty of sense.

It’s also likely an easier sell than a coupe or sedan to that significant other, especially if said significant other has imminent plans for family expansion.
