As Perfect as They Come?

It develops its full complement of 300 foot-pounds of twist at only 1,200 rpm, and that’s barely above idle. The huge dump of early torque is matched with 300 horsepower peaking at 5,800 rpm. Effectively, what this new engine delivers over the previous twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre mill is better torque production and greater fuel efficiency.

Thanks to sophisticated twin-scroll turbocharging, direct injection and BMW’s Valvetronic technology, the 535i’s new 3.0-litre inline 6-cylinder engine is a torque monster. (Photo: Rob Rothwell/Auto123.com)

Another factor governing a vehicle’s ability to launch itself is gearing, specifically the gear ratio in use when the pedal strikes the metal. In the case of the new 5-Series, an 8-speed automatic transmission ensures that a wide spectrum of gearing is available to maximize both performance and fuel economy. These juxtaposing strengths come together enormously well behind the 535i’s leather-wrapped wheel.

The drive
Two aspects of driving the 2011 535i standout for me. The first is the abundance of low-end torque that imbues the car with effortless propulsion; second is the vehicle’s smooth yet completely composed ride quality.

The polished flow of power from the new engine belies its reliance upon six cylinders to cultivate results. Off-the-line performance and passing lane proficiency are both commendable, and more in-line with V8-related expectations.

Along with their engine-design skill, BMW engineers have pretty well mastered the art of creating suspension systems that magically blend ride comfort with athleticism, and the new 5-Series is the epitome of that artistry.

I appreciated this accomplishment more each time I drove my tester. It presented unflappable handling competency in all driving scenarios while spoiling me with a remarkably smooth ride. And the spoils weren’t limited to ride and handling.

The 535i further spoiled with its impressive level of refinement and quiet, secure operation. This is a true luxury car as much as it is a sports sedan, and as a middle-aged slightly greying male, I welcomed that characteristic among its many other attributes.

Attributes a-plenty
It would take near limitless space to itemize the many fine attributes that the 2011 535i brings to bear. Suffice to say that in addition to those I’ve touched upon, BMW’s new mid-sizer also supplies cutting-edge safety and occupant protection along with an astounding array of comfort and convenience accoutrements.

With a base MSRP of $62,300, this holistic collection of properties comes at a price that’s likely to be a stumbling block for many. Add a few features, such as navigation, and the price tag moves rapidly toward $70K.

Apart from price, I find it difficult to knock the newest Bimmer. Yes, the 535i is – as perfect as they come.
