There is a silver-ish lining though. My SXT with many bells and whistles retailed for well over $27,000. This is clearly not the trim to buy. I would recommend the base SE car with the 173-hp 2.4L 4-cylinder engine and opt for the new 6-speed autobox. For a tad over $20,000, you will get a decent car for less than the price of many compacts.
As far as my assessment of the Avenger goes, at any point in time, unless Chrysler offers up massive discounts, I'd look elsewhere namely, at the Koreans.
The current Avenger may be wearing white gloves today, but I'm willing to bet that the next car will shed the glove and trade in its overalls for something from Banana Republic or RW & Co.
