The all-in-one subcompact
And during the car’s photo shoot, we successfully locked ourselves out of the car, thanks to the intelligent key system. With the engine running, we tried to open the rear hatch, but it was locked, so I reached in through the driver’s door and pressed on the central locking button on the dash.

That was a mistake; I closed the door, returned to the rear of the car only to find out that not only was the hatch still locked, but every other door was too (the same button locks and unlocks the doors). You’d think the “intelligent” key would prevent us from receiving a Darwin Award nomination, but no. To our defense, Ford admitted one of their engineers did the same thing during the car’s media launch, which made us feel less stupid.

Our loaded Fiesta SES costs $21,849. (Photo: Matthieu Lambert/Auto123.com)

Base price for a Fiesta Hatchback, which starts in SE trim, is $16,799. Our $18,899 SES tester includes 16-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, power windows, a rear spoiler and cruise control as well as optional leather upholstery ($1,200), the automatic transmission ($1,250) and an intelligent key system ($500), for a grand total of $21,849 before tax, freight and delivery.

Like we said in our recent subcompact comparison test, the Fiesta isn’t the quickest, the best-handling or the most spacious in its category, but it does everything so well that overall, we end up liking it a lot.
