World-class comfort on the road less travelled
LR4’s suspension enables excellent ride quality everywhere, and I’ve never driven anything through my usual array of off-road trails and mud holes that felt so comfortable, refined and tightly bolted together. It’s like a rolling granite slab on air shocks.

Really, the ride quality and suspension design that enable it proved the most impressive part of this machine over the course of a 1,500-kilometre test drive.

Five litres of sauce
A five-litre, four-cam, 375-horsepower V8 moves things along with electric smoothness and nearly noiseless operation, without breaking 2,000 rpm. Driven hard, it’ll put the premium sauce away faster than Keith Richards—but gentle driving or highway cruising sees reasonable consumption, relatively speaking.

Combined trail, highway and city driving saw my average consumption land just under 16 L/100 km. A six-speed automatic with manual mode shifting was included.

Ultimately, LR4 is an all-access pass to weekend adventure with the family, that can be hosed off to tackle nine-to-five duty, with classiness and comfort that’s hard to match at its sixty-grand starting price.

Compared to the fully-loaded cost of a Ford Explorer or Jeep Grand Cherokee, the LR4’s premium looks well worth shelling out. It might be the deal of the century for shoppers after an SUV with tremendous capability, pedigree and comfort.
