On sale in November, new engine for CL63 AMG
What also helps lower fuel consumption in the “C” mode is a new start/stop function, similar to what’s found in the Porsche Panamera. Stop at a traffic light under normal conditions and the V8 will shut off; as soon as the brake pedal is released, the engine fires back up instantly.

The CL63 AMG isn’t the most expensive or most powerful CL, though. The CL65 AMG returns for 2011, although its 6.0-litre, twin-turbo V12 and five-speed automatic now produce 621 horsepower and an electronically-limited 738 pound-feet of torque. According to Benz, the engine produces a peak torque of 885 lb-ft. Ouch.

The CL65 hits 60 mph (96 km/h) in 4.2 seconds. Oh, in case you care, which we doubt, engine-management improvements bring result in slightly lower fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.

Besides the engine in the CL63 AMG, other major changes applied to the 2011 CL-Class includes front and rear reskins; new hood, headlamps, grille, bumpers, taillamps and alloy wheels highlight the new model’s exterior appearance.

The CL63’s cockpit gets some minor changes as well, including a slightly revised instrument cluster and a new AMG sport steering wheel. A green ‘ECO’ symbol appears when the Controlled Efficiency mode is enabled. A chronometer is also included if, by any chance, the CL63 AMG owner takes his car to the track and wants to calculate his or her lap times.

In addition, the optional SPLITVIEW feature of the dashboard LCD screen can allow the driver to use the navigation system while the passenger can watch a DVD movie with wireless headphones.

The CL550 4MATIC and CL600 models will soldier on as well. Pricing should remain unchanged or increase slightly, which means between about $130K and $240K. Look for our first impressions of the 2011 CL-Class during the week of September 13th.
