As well, the ride is plush and comfortable, never floaty and always in control. At speeds that really deserve a moving violation citation, the E-Class wagon hugs the pavement with a firm gentle hand. I could easily see myself cruising the Autobahn in perfect confidence.
My all-too-short week-long road test returned a fuel consumption average of 11.5 L/100 km. A tad more highway driving would have lowered that number close to 10 with minimal effort.
Safety and technology
Mercedes-Benz has, with other high-end manufacturers, always promoted safety and the new E-Class is perhaps the brightest showcase at the moment for everything that the German brand offers in this department. Here are but a few examples of what you get: Attention Assist, Adaptive Braking system with hold function and hill start assist as well as the Advanced Driving Assistance package which includes Distronic Plus and Pre-Safe brakes. All these fancy words mean that you are covered in all instances unless, of course, a meteor lands on your car.
Oh, what a wagon!
It was truly a tough Monday morning (the day I got the ticket as well...) when I was required to give up the keys to this car. With an as-tested price of $77,750 (base retail price is $66,900) and the fact that, incomprehensibly, wagons don’t sell all that much, I was probably not to get the opportunity to drive this car again for a very long time.
Certainly, if I had the coin, I'd get one of these, maybe even two... Hell, why not? One can never have too many station wagons! With two of these in my driveway, not only would I be the envy of all my neighbours, but I would get wagon-loads of respect as well. It is an E-Class after all!
