At the Montreal International Auto Show, Hyundai will be serving up a completely redesigned 2012 Accent, first spotted in Beijing in April 2010 under the name "Verna."

The style of the South Korean manufacturer's entry-level model in North America is very similar to that of the 2011 Sonata and Elantra in terms of lines, grille and headlamps. This will mark the first time all the Hyundai models integrate similar design elements.

The model destined for our shores should be powered by 1.6-litre, direct injection, four-cylinder mill generating around 138 hp and 123 lb-ft of torque. In Europe and Asia, a 1.4-litre, 106-hp version is available, but it would be quite surprising if it made it to Canadian dealerships judging by the track record of the Accent, exclusively powered by a single mill since the beginning.

Power will be dispatched via a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic.

As for dimensions, the Accent's wheelbase will be three inches longer and the vehicle's overall length will gain 2.4 inches compared to the current variant. It will be available in four- and five-door versions and be delivered standard with six air bags. Options like stability control will be available on the better-endowed trim levels.

It will be interesting to see how Hyundai's subcompact car will fare on the market, considering its highly competitive segment that includes the likes of the Mazda2, Kia Rio, Honda Fit and Nissan Versa, each vying for sales supremacy.
