It’s just as spectacular as before, and just as fun to drive. And not only does the new Porsche Panamera feature a very spacious cabin, it now boasts an equally spacious engine compartment. Yes, the Panamera that had so impressed me in its turbo incarnation is returning to the attack in a more sensible fashion: fired by a six-cylinder mill.
Which, you’ll agree, leaves a wide open space under the hood, an unusual sight from the German manufacturer.
No changes
It’s impossible to tell from the outside, without reading the labels, that the Porsche I drove a few kilometres with was only powered by six cylinders. Its profile is the same, complete with curvy rear fascia and elongated hood.
Same story inside, with nothing less than one of the best cabins in the industry. Especially as my tester was a magnificent blend of colours, rich charcoal leather, brushed aluminum and shiny chrome. A spectacular finish that really sets the bar high for the competition. Though admittedly, in this segment, the competition isn’t piled up outside the gates.
Remarkable engine
Of course, the real news is the six-cylinder mill nestled under the hood. Those who’ve read my previous reviews will remember my admiration for the turbo engine that spurred the car on with sometimes impressive ease.
This Porsche is more reasonable, and its accelerations aren’t as stunning. Down by two cylinders, the engine nevertheless launches the car from 0 to 100 in 6.8 seconds. Nothing to write home about, but still a lot faster than many sport-oriented cars.
And remember that 300 hp are always enough in passing situations. And here’s something else that shouldn’t be overlooked: the engineers managed to retain a part of the exhaust note so typical of the brand, intensifying the experience. The Panamera’s steering ensures flawless cornering, and the high-end suspension system is truly delightful.
