General Motors announced that the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro will receive a more powerful 3.6L direct-injection V6, a new performance suspension package for SS coupes as well as several interior and technology improvements.
The new 'LFX' engine, which goes into production this summer, delivers 323 horsepower at 6,800 rpm – an increase of 11 horsepower over the 2011 model, with no compromise in fuel economy. The EPA-estimated highway rating for the 2012 Camaro 2LS is 30 mpg (7.8 L/100 km). The new mill is not only more potent but also 20.5-lb (9.3 kg) lighter than its predecessor.
Here is the full list of engine upgrades:
Among the interior enhancements are a revised instrument panel design, a new-look steering wheel and a power lift feature for the front passenger seat. Also new for 2012 is a Rear Vision Package, which adds a rearview camera system and an auto-dimming mirror to the existing Rear Park Assist feature.
Finally, the exterior will sport a new rear spoiler and the taillights that had been a part of the RS appearance package option will be made standard.
In related news, GM is planning to debut a 45th Anniversary Special Edition at the Camaro5 Fest II, April 15 in Arizona. Available with both coupe and convertible body styles, it will feature a unique rally stripe, in red and silver, that contrasts the Carbon Flash Metallic paint, exclusive 20-inch wheels in dark silver and many more cosmetic upgrades.
