We've always been infatuated with the C63 AMG since its launch in 2007. After all, who wouldn't be? With a rip-snorting 6.2-litre V8 shoehorned in the engine bay of a compact-sized sedan, not to mention track-ready suspension and brakes, countless hours of adrenaline-pumping fun can be found behind the wheel.
The C-Class receives an update for the 2012 model year, and Mercedes is taking that opportunity to introduce a coupe version alongside the sedan. It was a question of time before we'd see the two-door in C63 AMG trim. Here it is.
Mechanically, the C63 coupe is identical to the sedan. Unlike other AMG products that are receiving a new twin-turbo, 5.5-litre engine, the C63 keeps the 6.2-litre, naturally-aspirated V8 for now. It develops 451 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque, and is connected to a 7-speed automatic transmission with manual mode. When equipped with the AMG Development Package, output increases to 481 horsepower, and the company claims a 0-100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 174 mph, or 278 km/h.
As in the SLS AMG, the gearbox offers four driving modes via a rotary knob located on the centre console, including 'C', 'S', 'S+' and 'M'. The last three modes deliver increased agility, faster gear changes, rev matching and higher revs. There's also a RACE START function for quick, effective blastoffs.
Compared to the regular C-Class variants, the AMG has a unique three-link front suspension, a multi-link independent rear suspension and a wider track. The speed-sensitive power steering and perforated discs brakes and carryover from the sedan.
Mercedes' claim that the C63 AMG coupe has an "athletic presence that is reminiscent of the high-performance SL63 AMG" might be a little exaggerated, but there definitely is a family resemblance. The AMG treatment includes lower front and rear aprons, LED daytime running lights, side air outlets and an aluminum hood with powerdomes.
