Minor updates and value tweaks carry Tacoma into 2012
The TRD Off-Road Package gets a new front skid plate setup, in case you whack its underside on god-knows-what.

The audio systems have been upgraded, too. And they no longer have spinach-green LCD readouts with grey alarm-clock text on them. Designers jazzed up the interior with some revised trim bits, a new shift knob and steering wheel combo as well as a new, cleaner instrument cluster.

But the cabin in the tested 2012 models still looks and works pretty much just like yours. It’s simple, functional and easy to clean. Maybe a touch more classy, and a little less muddy.

In the bed, there are two extra tie-downs to help secure your weekend adventure gear. Water-repellent seats are available, in case you somehow wind up soaked with water or covered in mud before hopping in. And we know that can happen.

Oh, and towing capacity has been jacked up, too—now maxing out at 6,500 lbs. For most 2012 Tacoma shoppers, that increase means even less reason to shop out a larger truck. For Tacoma shoppers like yourself, it means more potential bragging rights after rescuing a heavy domestic truck from a mud hole.

In addition to the new updates and features, further value comes from revised (read: lower) pricing.

Toyota says there’s more for less in the 2012 Tacoma, right across the board. For instance, a 2012 Tacoma 4x4 Access Cab V6 with automatic gets what Toyota calls $1,425 in additional equipment over the 2011 model, alongside a price drop of over $2,000. The pickup gets a similar ‘more for less’ approach across the board.

New engines? Nope. Transmissions? Negative. You can still choose from four or six-cylinder power, two or four-wheel drive and automatic or manual transmissions in a variety of configurations and body styles. Tacoma also gets the only four-cylinder, 4x4 model in its competitive set.
