Pros: Even base model Sonata Hybrids get some relatively impressive equipment. And with aggressive pricing, the H-badged hybrid sedan from South Korea is a solid purchase.

Cons: It’s getting a bit old compared to others in its class, especially the Ford Fusion Hybrid and Honda Accord Hybrid. Also, the use of a traditional six-speed automatic transmission makes you wonder if Hyundai could have squeezed a little bit more efficiency out of their midsize hybrid offering.

2014 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Pricing: Pricing for the Sonata Hybrid starts at $28,249 for the well-equipped base model. Limited models jump to $30,449 and add power driver’s seat, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, sunroof, and 17-inch alloy wheels. At $34,249, Limited with Technology Package models include leather seating, heated rear seats, seven-inch touchscreen navigation, and upgraded Infinity audio.

2014 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Economy: The Sonata Hybrid, while only available with one driveline configuration, gets two sets of ratings. Base models are rated at 5.4/4.9L (city/highway) per 100 km. Limited models achieve the same highway rating but get a slightly higher city rating of 5.5L/100km.

Improvements and Changes: Hyundai has given the Sonata Hybrid a once-over for 2014, only adding a third-generation audio system with backup camera and LED interior lights as standard equipment.

Don’t Miss: For those looking for a hybrid sedan that will haul rear seat passengers on a regular basis, top trim models include heated rear seats, perfect for warming the kids up in the morning before hockey practice. That is if their hockey bags will fit in the 344 litre trunk.

2014 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Powertrain: The Sonata Hybrid gets a 2.4-litre Atkinson cycle four-cylinder engine and 35 kW electric motor producing a combined 199 hp and 235 lb-ft of torque. Unlike other hybrids, Hyundai utilizes a traditional six-speed transmission rather than a continuously variable unit.

Safety: The Sonata comes standard with six airbags (front, front seat-mounted side, and side curtain) available on all trims. Electronic Stability Control and Traction Control Systems are also standard fair.

Comparables: The Sonata Hybrid competes with its virtual twin, the Kia Optima, and other midsize hybrid sedans, such as the Toyota Camry Hybrid, Ford Fusion Hybrid, and Honda Accord Hybrid.
