Pros: The 2014 Mazda5 is an efficient, friendly-looking small minivan that can put a smile on the faces of parents who don't want the burden of a larger, V6-powered minivan. Based on the Mazda3 platform, it also proves nimble and fun to drive, not to mention fairly reliable.

Cons: Aside from the long documented rust problem affecting Mazda vehicles, the Mazda5 suffers from a relatively weak suspension (especially when loaded). Furthermore, folding the third-row seats is almost always a necessity when hauling cargo.

2014 Mazda5 Price: You can buy a 2014 Mazda5 for $21,995 in GS trim. Move up to the GT, and the price jumps to $24,805. The automatic transmission costs an extra $1,200 in both cases.

2014 Mazda5 Fuel Economy: Expect to achieve 6.8L/100km on the highway and 9.7L/100km in the city with the manual transmission, or 6.7/9.5 with the automatic transmission.

Improvements and Changes: None. Mazda is currently working on the next generation.

2014 Mazda5 Powertrain: Under the hood of the 2014 Mazda5 is a 2.5L DOHC 4-cylinder engine that produces 157 horsepower and 163 lb-ft of torque. It can be mated to either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed automatic with manual mode.

Cargo Capacity: With all six seats up, there's only 117 litres of cargo room available. Fold the third row, and you'll get 426 litres. Still not enough? Just fold the second-row seats as well to increase capacity to 857 litres.

Safety: The 2014 Mazda5 comes standard with six airbags, 4-wheel disc brakes, ABS, brake assist, electronic brake force distribution, stability control, and traction control.

Comparing the 2014 Mazda5: The most direct competitors of the Mazda5 are the Chevrolet Orlando and Kia Rondo.
