We've been fed teasers for weeks, and now it's here: The Kia Sportspace concept made its global debut at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show this week as a preview of the next-generation Kia Optima. While a wagon variant in North America is a long stretch, you have to admit that this concept is pretty good-looking.
One innovative — and pretty cool — feature on the new Kia Sportspace is the loading system which comprises 28 rolling balls within the trunk floor. In combination with the low tailgate, these allow the easy loading of heavy suitcases and sport equipment. When the car's ignition is switched on, each of the stainless steel balls lowers into its recess by 3mm, ensuring cargo doesn't slide when the journey begins. What's more, skis can be stored between the rear seats, with a padded leather armrest doubling up as a ski rest.
A 247-horsepower, 2.0L turbocharged engine with direct injection (T-GDI) hides behind the Kia Sportspace concept's “Tiger Nose” grille which has become a staple of Kia products. Flanking the latter are LED headlights shaped like ice cubes. Inside the airy cabin, the four occupants will find rich materials such as leather, aluminum, and even carbon fibre.
Don't get too excited just yet as Kia reportedly plans to first offer the production version of its Sportspace concept in wagon-friendly markets. Let's keep our fingers crossed!
