A non-American alternative

Pros: If you’re not a fan of American pickups, then the Nissan Frontier is a passable alternative to the regular lot.

Cons: The reintroduction of the brand new Canyon and Colorado American-bred compact trucks will give those on the market for a smaller, more urban pickup alternative options to Nissan’s Frontier.

2015 Nissan Frontier Price and Fuel Economy: As with any pickup, there are a multitude of options and configurations to choose from. So, let’s break it down in terms of pricing:

  • 2015 Nissan Frontier King Cab S $22,498
  • 2015 Nissan Frontier King Cab SV $23,963
  • 2015 Nissan Frontier King Cab PRO-4X $30,208
  • 2015 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab SV $31,113
  • 2015 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab PRO-4X $35,358
  • 2015 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab SL $37,598

In terms of fuel economy, as there are two engines and varying weights, those numbers range from 14.8/10.3 city/highway L/100km to 15.7/11.3 city/highway L/100km.

Powertrain: There are two engines available in the 2015 Nissan Frontier, the smaller 2.5L DOHC 4-cyl that’s good for 152 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque, and the larger 4.0L DOHC V6 that produces 261 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque.

There are three transmission options: the 6-speed manual transmissions (4x4) is standard on the Frontier King Cab PRO-X (and only available on that particular model), whereas the 5-speed automatic (4x2) is standard on S and SV models and not available on the PRO-X. A 5-speed automatic transmission (4x4) is not available on the S, but is standard on the SV models and an option for the PRO-X.

A switch-operated 2-speed transfer case is only available on 4x4 models, which include the SV and PRO-X.

Changes and Improvements: The Nissan Frontier saw a facelift and changes in 2009, but since then has remained largely unchanged in North America. Non-US markets have seen engine upgrades and exterior.

Cargo Capacity: King Cabs offer seating for 4, whereas Crew Cab bumps that to 5 bum spots. Towing capacities range from 3,500lbs to 6,500lbs, and max. payload ranges from 925lbs to 1,246lbs depending on chassis set-up (4x2 vs. 4x4) and transmission choice (manual vs. automatic).

Both standard and long beds are available, depending on your model of choice.

Safety: The 2015 Nissan Frontier comes with all manner of standard safety equipment and airbags.
