A track-ready iQ? Well, that’s exactly what Toyota unveiled at this year's Tokyo Auto Salon, in Japan. The highly tuned GRMN iQ Racing Concept features extensive cosmetic and performance modifications that distinguishes it from the Toyota's new city car, soon to be sold in Canada under the Scion brand.

The acronym "GRMN" stands for Toyota's motorsport competition partner Gazoo Racing and Japan’s tuning specialists MN. This new project car follows the sale, in 2009, of 100 juiced-up iQs developed in a similar manner by Gazoo specialists.

Features added on this iQ show car to turn it into a racer include a deep front air dam, huge lower air intake, racing wheels, massive spoiler, rear diffuser, and a dual exhaust system. Inside, a roll cage, sports seats, alloy pedals and racing instruments were also added.

The pumped-up iQ also benefits from a supercharged version of the 1.3L 4-cylinder. This boosts power output from the 90hp of the normally-aspirated standard engine to a whooping 126hp and 116 ft-pd of torque!

Apart from Gazoo and MN, modifications made to this vehicle were carried out by Toyota Racing Development, G Sports, the Fuji Speedway and a group of company staff known as the Toyota Engineering Society.

This sporty iQ was among 17 vehicles prepared by Toyota for the Auto Salon, the world's largest tuning exhibition. This year’s 3-day event presented on January 14 to 16 drew a record crowd of 243,077 visitors!

And while we’re at it, dear Mr. Toyota Canada why not import a small series of this iQ in to launch a new national racing championship that would be both affordable and fun. Like the Echo Cup and the Honda-Michelin were??
