Land Rover; legendary revered and respected brand of do anything go anywhere SUVs... is going to build and sell a front-wheel drive compact crossover? Sacrilege or a good business case?

We'll have to wait and see but this decision was not made due to desperation. In fact, building a more affordable Land Rover, even if it is FWD, could be a very wise move. It is clear that brand names are very important to consumers and therefore, a 30k Land Rover could catch on.

Luxury brand manufacturers such as BMW, Audi and Mercedes have or are toying with the idea of making their brand of automotive goodness available to a larger portion of the population. If they all manage to maintain DNA and driving characteristics, I say “go for it!”.

The LRX concept-inspired vehicle still has no name but LR1 seems like an easy sale. Fear not unconditional fans of the British marque as it will be available with full-time AWD.

According to available info, the mini-rover should arrive sometime by 2012 in Europe. No news about North America as of yet.
