It might just be the automotive equivalent of Joan Rivers. The Mercedes-Benz G class has lived a long and successful life as vehicles go, and has just added another facelift to its cosmetic resume. Over the years, its had a number of these- all the while maintaining an elegant, refined and somewhat craggy persona.

Introduced in 1979, the G-Class was mainly intended for use off-road. Engineers have continually adapted the machine to meet ever-changing customer requirements and demands- like a better drive on the road, the inclusion of the latest electronics and safety systems, and a more sedan-like interior.

On that note, there's a new instrument cluster, more user friendly climate controls, and a new multifunction steering wheel which can be trimmed in leather and wood. A modified centre console carries the German manufacturers COMAND APS control system which centralizes the navigation, cell phone, and audio control systems into a single interface.
Optional extras include a tire pressure monitoring system, a sports exhaust system, interior style upgrades and even a reversing camera to prevent drivers from running over any pesky hidden compacts.

Several models are available- including the G320 CDI with a diesel engine, the G500 and 500 horsepower G55 AMG.

Dealerships are currently accepting orders with the first units set to arrive in mid April.
