Every year in October, a bunch of Canada's top automotive journalists gather for an intense week of driving and voting, in order to determine the best new car and truck of the year.
The three finalists for the Canadian Car of the Year and Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year awards were announced during the Montreal Auto Show last January. However, it's the Toronto Auto Show that hosts the final announcement of the winning vehicles.
For 2012, the Canadian Car of the Year award went to the Hyundai Elantra, beating out the Hyundai Accent and the Kia Optima. The Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year title was handed to the Volkswagen Touareg TDI, which bested the Dodge Journey and BMW X3.
The AJAC's Best New Design award went to the Hyundai Veloster, while GM's Voltec propulsion system, which equips the Chevrolet Volt, won the Best New Technology crown.
