Major concerns over the European economy are likely delaying Alfa Romeo's plans to come back to North America next year.

CEO Harald Wester told the media at the Frankfurt Motor Show that the magnificent 4C two-seater, set to lead the return of the Italian brand after a three-decade absence, will make its market debut in 2013 instead of 2012, as originally announced.

The new Alfa Romeo SUV has been pushed to 2013 as well. It was initially planned for a Turin plant, but the automaker says economic uncertainty is forcing a reevaluation of the production site. A decision is expected later this month.

The domino effect will result in the Giulia sedan and wagon being delayed one year, too. Both will now go on sale in 2014.

The news comes a day after Sergio Marchionne, president and CEO of Fiat and Chrysler, warned that the euro could crumble if political leaders in Europe don't accelerate efforts to solve the financial crisis that has been continuing for too long.
