Long-time Audi fans will forever praise the legendary Quattro for elevating the brand to the highest ranks with an innovative all-wheel drive system and unparalleled performance. And when Audi brilliantly celebrated 30 years of quattro-driven vehicles with an all-new Quattro Concept at last year's Paris Motor Show, the question burning everyone's lips was: will it ever get the green light?

Insiders reportedly told Autocar that the answer is yes. There will be a limited production run and a market launch in 2013. Right now, a single engineering prototype, based on an S5, has been built by Audi’s Quattro division. It will be sampled by members of the Audi board before the project gets the official go-ahead.

The lightweight, 402-horsepower, all-wheel-drive coupe rides on a version of Audi’s aluminum spaceframe chassis, while its body makes extensive use of carbon fibre-reinforced plastics. At 1,425 kilos, it weighs 300 kilos less than the RS5. While impressive, this feat still does not satisfy Audi.

The final product will rely on additional weight-saving measures, including a 150-millimetre shorter wheelbase, seats made from forged composites and possibly dash mouldings made from hemp. The goal is for the production Quattro to weigh as little as 1,300 kilos, making it lighter than even the R8 supercar.
