Audi has just revealed the first details on the athletic new S6, S7 and S8 before their official Frankfurtian debut. When they hit dealerships next spring, all three will sport a new engine worthy of the S emblem as well as altogether surprising fuel efficiency numbers.
S6, S6 Avant and S7
The trio has swapped their old 5.2-litre V10 for a 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 pumping out 420 ponies and 405 lb-ft of torque, and they’ll all inherit the automaker’s Quattro all-wheel drive as well as a 7-speed autobox.
The 0-100 km/h dash will vary between 4.8 and 4.9 seconds, while top speeds will be limited to 250 km/h in all three cases.
The new engine proves just as powerful as the old mill – but it burns 25% less fuel. Ratings are set at 9.7 L/100 km for the S6 and S7 and 9.8 L/100 km for the S6 Avant.
Impressive numbers for such potent machines, but they wouldn’t have been possible without the addition of start/stop and cylinder management systems; the latter ensures the V8 uses only four cylinders when the driver takes it easy.
Standard equipment includes, among other things, xenon lighting, twin LED lamps, an on-board computer with colour screen and a 10-speaker stereo system with Bluetooth connectivity.
S8
The sedan uses a modified version of the 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 putting down no less than 520 ponies (70 more than the outgoing model) and 479 lb-ft of torque, and it can leap from 0 to 100 clicks in just 4.2 seconds.
It will, however, sip just 13.2 litres per 100 km, a 23% improvement over the 2011 S8, again thanks to start/stop and cylinder management systems.
Beefy 20-inch wheels wrapped in 265/40 rubber and four-wheel vented disc brakes will keep the car firmly planted, working hand in hand with an adaptive air suspension system with three height settings.
Navigation, a 1,400-watt, 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system and parking assist with 360-degree peripheral vision are all included standard.
