Audi says that drivers have unprecedented levels of information to process at the wheel, and that the task of driving is becoming more demanding than ever before. To counter this trend and give owners a more relaxed driving experience, Audi will be offering Braking Guard as one of several outward-looking safety features available on most vehicles in their lineup.
Forming part of the radar-based Adaptive Cruise Control system (ACC), the system constantly monitors the distance and closing rate between the car to which it's fitted and the next vehicle in traffic. Once a pre-set threshold is exceeded, the system can automatically slow the vehicle down and even apply the brakes. Braking Guard works between 30 and 200 km/h and is fully integrated into the vehicle's computer system, with access to the engine, brakes and gearbox.
Though the system is able to apply moderate braking pressure on its own, it's ultimately the driver's responsibility to be attentive and alert to prevent an accident from taking place. If the system's automatic braking is calculated to be insufficient for avoiding a rear-end collision, the braking guard system can alert the driver through an indicator on the instrument cluster or a brief, computer-generated stab on the brakes that says 'pay attention!'
Audi Braking Guard will join other features like lane assist, side assist and park assist.
