NDA is an amazing place to visit and I would have enjoyed it even if it wasn’t an auto design studio. First established in 1979, it’s predominately a rather large concrete structure, and yet with some clever use of water, shrubbery, and other such features, they have managed to create an object of beauty, and a tranquil setting for its design team. This is important, as great design comes from open and creative minds and it’s difficult to get to that point and place when you’re working within a normal office structure.
Because of this, much of NDA is laid out open-plan where the designers can intermingle, yet escape to their own space when required. With approximately 65 people on staff, there is always somebody roaming around the place. In fact, it’s not unusual for designers to come and go at all hours of the day & night. I guess you have to create when the mood takes you!
Of course, things have changed greatly over the years. What started out as simply a location to provide a local perspective on the North American market and to throw out the odd idea or two, NDA is now a world-class design studio. In fact, it regularly competes with other Nissan/Infiniti design centers around the globe for upcoming projects and, although competition is somewhat fierce, from what I hear, NDA has an outstanding record of achievement.
All I can say is, from what I seen, I’m not the least bit surprised by that!
