At the International Vienna Motor Symposium (April 24-25), Volkswagen announced the production version of the BlueTDI, a next-generation turbodiesel engine specifically developed for the North American market. The first model to receive this new fuel-efficient powerplant will be the company's compact sedan.

The 2009 Jetta BlueTDI will debut as one of the world's cleanest and most economic cars of its class. Volkswagen executives believe that this engine will help diesel get its big break in North America because of its low fuel consumption and excellent mileage. On the highway, for example, the Jetta BlueTDI can reach up to 60 mpg (3.92 L/100 km). This is an improvement of 12 percent over its predecessor, which had a lower capacity and higher emissions.

The next-generation BlueTDI is a 2.0L 4-cylinder producing 140 horsepower and a remarkable 236 lb-ft of torque. Even more impressive is the 90-percent reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions. Alone, the dual exhaust gas recirculation circuit (low- and high-pressure exhaust gases) works to eliminate NOx by up to 60 percent.
