The new BMW M5 concept showcased at the Shanghai Auto Show in April obviously served to whet our appetite until the world debut of the production model, scheduled for the IAA in Frankfurt this September.

Today, the German automaker revealed the 2012 specs along with some pictures of the iconic sports sedan.

A high-revving, 4.4-litre V8 with M TwinPower Turbo package cranks out 560 horsepower (+10%) and 502 lb-ft of torque (+30%) – good for 0-100 accelerations in 4.4 seconds, 0-200 in 13.0 seconds and a top speed of 305 km/h. For all its impressive performance, the engine averages 9.9 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres and only 232 grams of CO2 per kilometre. First announced at 25%, the drop in fuel consumption actually exceeds 30%.

Unfortunately, rumours of all-wheel drive have been greatly exaggerated – at least for now. The M5 once again transmits power to the rear wheels through a 7-speed M double-clutch transmission featuring shift paddles on the steering wheel.

Handling is enhanced by an electronically-controlled Active M Differential, an M Servotronic steering, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), lightweight compound high-performance brakes and 19-inch M light-alloy wheels wrapped in top-quality rubber.

Meanwhile, the cockpit boasts a newly-designed, leather-covered centre console; M sports seats with Merino leather and aluminum trim strips, four-zone automatic climate control and ambient lighting.

Most of the options available with other 5-Series models find their way into the 2012 BMW M5's catalogue, ranging from M multifunction seats to hands-free tailgate opening.
