The 2013 Buick Verano and Encore will feature 10 standard airbags as well as new active safety systems that use sounds, visual warnings and automated actions to help prevent collisions.

All Verano models will include a rearview camera and offer an optional safety package with GM's Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. The latter senses cross traffic up to 65 feet away that may not be visible to the driver when backing out of a parking space or driveway. The driver is alerted with a red directional arrow and three directional beeps.

Meanwhile, the new Encore crossover will become the first vehicle in its class to offer the combination of Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning. Both rely on a single forward-looking camera sensor that is cheaper for customers than competitive radar and camera systems.

At speeds of more than 40 km/h, Forward Collision Alert gives audible and visual warnings when a collision may be imminent. Lane Departure Warning alerts drivers when they may have crossed a detected lane marker without using a turn signal at speeds over 55 km/h.
