Canadian Minister of Transport Denis Lebel and Minister of Health Leona Aglukkaq today announced important safety regulations that will require all new vehicles in Canada to include shoulder belts in the rear centre seat.

Moreover, vehicle safety testing procedures will need to include female and child-sized dummies in addition to the male dummies that were previously required. The speed at which the vehicles are tested will also be increased.

“Canadians expect their cars to be built to the highest safety standards, so the revisions to this regulation will ensure not only enhanced safety protection for occupants in frontal crashes, it will also more closely align both Canadian and U.S. vehicle standards making advanced safety technologies more readily available and affordable,” said Mark Nantais, President of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers' Association.

Automakers have until September 1st, 2015 to comply with the new requirements. Older vehicles won't have to be retrofitted.
