At the New York International Auto Show this morning, Volkswagen's new Golf was named the World Car of the Year by a panel of automotive journalists from Asia, Europe and North America.

The Golf, which will soon be on sale in Canada (replacing the Rabbit), took top honours from the two other finalists, the Toyota iQ that will be sold in North America under the Scion brand, and the Ford Fiesta, which will arrive in Canada and U.S. next spring.

There is also a World Performance Car of the Year competition, and the award for 2009 Goes to the Nissan GT-R, beating out finalists Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and Porsche 911 Carrera.

The Honda FCX Clarity has been honoured as the World Green Car of the Year title for 2009, beating out the Mitsubishi i MiEV and the Toyota iQ. The FCX Clarity is powered by a hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain and is currently roaming U.S. streets in the hands of a handful of people, on a lease-only basis.

The 2009 World Car Design of the Year award has been handed to the Fiat 500, a car that is rumoured to be sold in North America through Chrysler dealerships.
