Detroit - Lexus celebrated its 20th anniversary of existence today by introducing the 2010 Lexus HS 250h, its first entry-luxury hybrid sedan, at the North American International Auto Show, in Detroit.
"In 20 years, Lexus has gone from question mark, to benchmark, leading to a landmark series of hybrid vehicles, including the vehicle we're debuting here today the first ever dedicated luxury hybrid", said at the press conference Mark Templin, Lexus Group Vice President and General Manager in the US.
This three-box sedan is equipped with hybrid drive system made of a four-cylinder 2.4-liter Atkinson-cycle engine and a compact electric engine. With a combined power output 187 horsepower, the HS 250h city fuel consumption will be inferior to a Smart's said Mr. Templin.
The HS 250h will fits between the IS compact luxury sport sedan and the ES 350 intermediate size luxury sedan. It shares the platform on the new Toyota Prius, scheduled to be introduced in Detroit tomorrow.
This Lexus sedan will offer a wide array of optional high tech gadgetry including an lane-keep assist system, a head-up display system and LED headlights to mention a few.
The decision to offer this vehicle was taken because of a latent demand. "More than 60 percent of entry-luxury car buyers would have considered buying a hybrid if one had been available. Now we offer one", said Mr. Templin.
The HS 250h is slated to be available at Canadian dealerships this coming summer.
