A field of over fifty new vehicles has just been narrowed down to two big winners by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). The group of Canada's top professional automotive writers made their most important announcement of the year this morning at the Canadian International Auto Show (CIAS) in Toronto, Ontario.

These winners are announced in the fall after four days of back-to-back testing during an event called “Test Fest”. Category winners go on to be re-evaluated against one another to compete for the coveted title of ‘Canadian Car of the Year’.

This year, over 50 vehicles were evaluated-- and multiple category wins went to Mazda and Audi. Volkswagen came away with 3 of the 12 category awards-- giving them a 3 in 12 chance at the Canadian Car of the Year title.

Today, at the Canadian International Auto Show (CIAS) in Toronto, the AJAC made their most important announcement of the year.

The 2010 Canadian Car of the year is the 2010 Volkswagen Golf GTI. For the win, the GTI beat out the other category winners in terms of merit, importance, style, safety and performance.

In addition to the Canadian Car of the Year, the AJAC has called the Subaru Outback the Canadian utility vehicle of the year. Criteria to win this category are similar to the Car of the Year category-- though capability and off-road abilities are also considered.

The AJAC also gives out two yearly awards for Best new Technology, and Best new Design. It was Audi who came away with the technology award for 2010, for their Drive Select system/technology.

Finally, AJAC officials called BMW 335d to the podium to present their ‘Best new Design’ award for 2010.
