A partnership between the Canadian government, the province of Manitoba and the city of Winnipeg will help reduce harmful exhaust emissions in Winnipeg. A WinSmart gas station selling biodiesel fuel has just opened shop.

This fuel will power Winnipeg's fleet with B10 biodiesel, a mixture containing 10% biodiesel and 90% conventional diesel. Biodiesel is used in diesel engines and stems from renewable natural sources such as vegetable oil; it doesn't contain petroleum.

WinSmart is an urban transportation showcase program created by Transport Canada. The program, which costs 35 million dollars, demonstrates, evaluates and encourages efficient strategies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions produced by urban transportation.

The three levels of government, federal, provincial and municipal, have invested in the WinSmart program in order to stimulate the development of innovative technologies and save fuel. The federal government alone is investing some $185,325 in WinSmart, an amount that could be increased up to $2,000,000.
