According to police in Minnesota, stealing a car is easier and faster during winter. With the lower temperatures, owners often keep their vehicles running to warm up with the keys inside. Driveways, day care centres and gas stations are just a few places where cars may be left unattended for a short while. Christmas presents and personal belongings wait inside and robbers take advantage of the busy holiday season to experience a different type of gift hunt.

Authorities and insurance companies point out that a vehicle with the doors locked but the key in the ignition is just as likely to get stolen as a vehicle with the doors unlocked. In fact, many insurance companies will not cover losses tied to owners' negligence, including leaving a vehicle running unattended.

While nobody likes to freeze as they hit the road, drivers are encouraged not to leave their vehicles running unattended, even with the doors locked. A remote starter offers the best of both worlds since you can warm up your vehicle from the comfort of your house and know that the engine will shut off if anyone touches the brake or gas pedal.
