The Audi Allroad quattro sauntered off of the North American playing field some years back, though Audi is now officially building a new A4-based Allroad model for Europe.
With European availability announced from this summer, the new Allroad would do battle with the likes of elemental off-road wagons like the Subaru Outback, Volvo XC70 and the upcoming Saab 9-3x.
The new Allroad features a taller stance than the standard 'Avant' wagon, as well as larger roof rails, more aggressive tires, unique body cladding and distinctive front and rear fascias. Think of the A4 Avant as a running shoe, and the Allroad as more of a hiking boot. Photos show an interior largely unchanged from that of the A4 Avant.
Skid plates, quattro all wheel drive and a full line of available gas and diesel engines should ensure off-road prowess in a variety of situations. Transmission choices in Europe include seven-speed dual clutch gearboxes and six-speed manuals.
Of course, if Audi decides to send the new Allroad to our dealerships, it's likely to come only with a single gasoline engine option and an automatic transmission. North American availability has yet to be announced.
