Here’s a great gift idea for Boxing Day : a book inspired by emotion and the craftsmanship of some of today’s greatest hot rod builders. Ken Gross’ coffee table book “Art of the Hot Rod” offers a stunning gallery of some of the finest American hot rods and the artists behind these creations.

Exquisite studio photography allows readers to appreciate those rolling sculptures. Readers can almost step inside the private world of the 20 or so talented builders: Bobby Alloway, Roy Brizio, Pete Chapouris, Dave Crouse, Zane Cullen, Rick Dore, Steve Frisbie, Richard Graves, Alan Johnson, the Kennedy brothers, Barry Lobeck, Donn Lowe, Jim Lowrey, Jr., Steve Moal, Don Orosco, Ken “POSIES” Fenical, Keith Cornell and Ken Schmidt (“Rolling Bones”), Dave Simard, Vern Tardel and Troy Trepanier.

To produce this work, two “artists” in their own rights teamed up. First, there’s automotive author and journalist Ken Gross. Car and motorcycle enthusiast since childhood, he has been Executive Director of the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles after spending a lengthy career in the American automotive press with Hot Rod Magazine, The Rodder's Journal, Street Rodder, Hop Up, Hemispheres, The Robb Report, AutoWeek, edmunds.com and Automobile Magazine. He currently writes a monthly column for Old Cars Weekly called, “Speaking of Hot Rods”, and he is the Chief Class Judge for historic hot rods at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

Then there’s Peter Harholdt, the photographer. This SCCA raceer, lifelong car enthusiast and preeminent studio photographer has worked for several major institutions like The Smithsonian, The White House, The Louvre, and The Museum of Modern Art. For this book, Peter built an ingenious mobile studio that allowed him to shoot all of the 111 creations profiled regardless of environment, locale or weather. A feat he realized in 41 days and almost 22 000 kilometers traveled in 31states!

A must-have book for history buffs and hot rodders alike!
