Last week, the prestigious and dependable magazine The Economist published a list of countries with the highest car ownership per resident. The average is established for 1,000 residents, and Canada holds an unexpected rank.

Canada is in fact ranked 5th, averaging around 560 cars per 1,000 residents, and is even ahead of Germany in the list. Also surprising is the fact that only one other G8 country is ranked higher than Canada, with Italy coming in 4th.

But perhaps most unusual are the top three spots, tiny Luxemburg topping the list with an impressive 647 cars. According to The Economist, Luxemburg's rank is explained by the small size of the State as well as its wealth. It's followed by Iceland and New Zealand.

The position of the other big car consumers is established according to the same criteria, sales volume notwithstanding. Australia is ranked 8th and France 12th. As for the U.S., it trails behind in the 16th spot with around 470 cars. Finally, England is ranked 19th, Japan 21st and South Korea 46th.

The results are spread out between 2005 and 2009 depending on the available data. Exact numbers are not specified in the list or the article.
