Sergio Marchionne, president and CEO of Fiat and the Chrysler Group, doesn’t believe in hybrids and never made it a secret. He’ll be forced to change his tune shortly, however.
Marchionne says the new Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards (CAFE) that the Obama administration will be adopting soon will make hybrid solutions inevitable.
The project will force automakers to decrease the standard consumption of their entire fleets to an average of 6.63 L/100 km by 2016. That number will drop to 4.32 by 2025.
Chrysler has quite an arduous road ahead of it, as currently only one hybrid version of the Chrysler 300 is in the works, for 2013.
Other than hybrid solutions, pretty much all the big Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge products (SUVs, pickups, etc.) will eventually include diesel engines in North America, starting with the Jeep Grand Cherokee in 2013.
